Day 2: See the Area – Time to Adventure

Wake up in the heart of the Laurel Highlands and let the day unfold.

Choose Your Trail:

Explore Ohiopyle State Park

Ohiopyle State Park spans over 20,000 acres in Pennsylvania’s Laurel Highlands, offering endless opportunities for hiking, biking, paddling, and exploring. With more than 79 miles of trails, breathtaking overlooks, and the Youghiogheny River running through it, the park is a year-round destination for nature lovers and adventure seekers alike. It also features a significant stretch of the Great Allegheny Passage (GAP)—a nearly-level, 150-mile trail connecting Cumberland, Maryland, to Pittsburgh. Over 26 miles of the GAP pass directly through Ohiopyle, making it a perfect route for cyclists and walkers of all skill levels.

Whether you’re visiting for the waterfalls or the whitewater, the park has something for everyone. Below are three of the most popular trails for those wanting to make the most of their stay.

Ferncliff Trail

Distance: 2-mile loop
Skill Level: Easy to Moderate
Dog Friendly: Yes, leash required

Located just outside downtown Ohiopyle, Ferncliff Trail is a short loop packed with scenery. Following the river, the trail features waterfall views, rapids, and several great spots for fishing or simply enjoying the sounds of rushing water. While the trail is accessible for families and kids, there are a few rocky areas that may require extra care, especially in wet or winter conditions.

Jonathan Run Trail and Sugar Run Falls

Distance: 3.6 miles round trip
Skill Level: Moderate

Quieter than Ferncliff and tucked into the park’s northwest corner, Jonathan Run Trail is ideal for hikers looking for a bit more solitude. The trail follows a stream and features a series of small waterfalls along the way. A short additional hike leads to Sugar Run Falls, one of the region’s most beautiful and peaceful spots, complete with a natural swimming hole that is rarely crowded.

Meadow Run Trail

Distance: Approximately 3 miles round trip
Skill Level: Moderate

Known for its unique rock formations and shaded rhododendron-lined paths, Meadow Run Trail is both scenic and adventurous. Along the way, hikers will come across Flat Rock, a popular stop for resting or picnicking. When water levels are high, natural rock slides along the trail provide opportunities for safe and refreshing fun. Be prepared for muddy conditions if it has rained recently.
